What is Bocking 14 comfrey?

Bocking 14 is a comfrey cultivar often chosen for mulch, compost, biomass, and productive garden systems. It is widely discussed as a sterile type grown from crowns or root divisions rather than from seed.

Why growers like Bocking 14

  • Fast leafy growth for chop-and-drop mulch.

  • Useful for compost and liquid feed systems.

  • Popular in food forests and regenerative gardens.

  • Usually grown from divisions or crowns rather than seed

Bocking 14 vs common comfrey

People often compare Bocking 14 with common comfrey because both are useful, but they are not always sold or managed in the same way.

  • Common comfrey is often easier to find in general herb and garden circles.

  • Bocking 14 is commonly preferred by growers looking for a non-seeding or controlled comfrey option.

  • Common comfrey and Bocking 14 may differ in how growers talk about spreading, propagation, and ideal use

  • I have found that Bocking 14 is a much larger plant with a bigger Biomass quantity.

Bocking 14 vs common comfrey

Our main current offer is a Bocking 14 or Russian Comfrey (Symphytum uplandicum) line supplied as crowns. We describe it this way carefully because this is how the line is known and how it came to me, and because we prefer to be clear and responsible in how we present planting stock. The line has been around for at least 3 generations with no seeding ever reported.

Common comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is handled separately and will be listed on its own when propagated stock is available in suitable quantities.

What can Bocking 14 be used for?

  • Chop-and-drop mulch around fruit trees and garden beds.

  • Compost support and biomass production.

  • Liquid plant feed systems.

  • Regenerative garden and small farm planting.

Where do I start with Bocking 14

Most growers start with crowns, root cuttings, or divisions from established plants. Once planted into decent soil and kept moist while establishing, comfrey can become a vigorous long term plant.
